Color correction

I really enjoyed this week's assignment... I've been trying different things in Photoshop to familiarize myself with the different tools and I'm getting more comfortable with it. I know there is much more to learn, but it's a good start. In this first set of photos I used the Color Replacement tool and changed the color of the train from red to green. I also used the Shadow/Highlight to bring some of the detail in the blackness (upper right in the photo) and added some light with the Brightness/Contrast. I had to try this a couple of times, but I like the outcome.

The second set shows a photo of me taken without the flash in which my face came out really dark. I applied the Shadows/Highlight tool and was able to brighten up my face. I adjusted the Highlights, Midtones and Shadows individually and was really pleased because not only was I able to bring light to my face and clothing, I also changed some of the landscape in the background. The clouds in the sky and the mountains in the far back are a little more defined, same with the green in the grass and trees.

Great job on the train; how exactly did you do this... with just selection and RBG adjustments or something else? Also, where was that photo of you taken?

Hi Jay,
On the train I used the Color Replacement tool (Image-Adjustments-Replace Color). It was really easy to use, I took the eyedropper and pointed to the color I wanted changed in the photo and then selected the new color. I changed the fuzziness, added a little more of the selection with the eyedropper and that was it. Pretty cool tool!

The second photo was taken at Mt. Philo, about 15-20 minutes south on Rte. 7. Beautiful views up there...

The train picture is great! Thanks for explaining how you did it! I am going to have to give it a try! The photo of you with the light correction came out great also. It is amazing how correcting the highlights, shadows and midtones can save a photo!

Both of these pictures look great, and I love the bright green train! You did a great job adjusting the lighting in the second picture. It still looks natural.

I love the train, but am really impressed with the photo you changed the lighting on. It is amazing what you can do with a photo. Before seeing this I would have been dissapointed if my photo came out shady and washed out, but you turned it into a keeper. I can't wait to play around with this.

I really thought the photo of me was ruined, but when choosing which photos to use for this assignment that one came to my mind immediately. I too was surprised of how much I was able to adjust it in Photoshop and make it look more natural.

The lesson that is glaringly obvious is that there is a lot of information encoded in the binary (digital) information on the photo. Even subtle differences our eyes can't see...I like the train green, because it feels more harmonious. Very nice work on your photo too. Mt Philo was a favorite place to go while I was growing up. It is great place to go sledding! Way worth the walk...

Alina,

Excellent job on these photos. I agree the train looks more natural with green than the red, and I like how it isn't so dark in the loading dock area. Wow, nice work with bringing the light back to the photo of yourself as well as the landscape in the background. Great job!
